How to get rid of nuisance birds
While there are some birds that you do not mind having around your house at all, there are others that you simply do not want around. There are many different kinds of nuisance birds that can really destroy the peace and look of your home or property.
Birds such as crows or blackbirds can ruin your garden or farm crops by eating away at the things that you have spent a lot of your money and time to harvest. This can be a giant nuisance to you, but can also be quite costly to you in the long run as well. Pigeons, seagulls, and other birds like these leave a lot of waste around that can be dangerous to the health of you and your family. Because they travel in large colonies together, the amount of waste can be quite excessive, and coupled with the fact that the feces can stain they can create quite a horrific problem for your home.
If you have these birds flying around your house you want to do all that you can to keep them off of your property. To accomplish that, here are a few steps to consider employing.
First, start by considering getting a dog for the outside area of your property. Dogs love to chase birds, and not many of these birds are brave enough to challenge a dog, especially a big one. If you put out your German shepherd, retriever, or other kind of large dog, you can be sure that they will help to scare away these birds and keep them off of your property. The moment that the bird attempts to land, the dog will go chasing after it and scare it away. This can really help to resolve your problem quickly.
You also need to consider that if there are food sources available for these birds then they are going to return. This means you need to try to remove everything that could be available to them as a source of food. For a time, you may need to remove such things as bird feeders so that birds that you do not want on your property cannot feed on this as well. Make sure that your garbage cans are securely and tightly sealed. Do not leave pet dishes outside with food in them. If you are growing a garden it is a good idea to place a kind of chicken wire mesh over the top of the garden to protect from birds attempting to eat your crops. Take these kinds of steps in keeping these animals away.
You also want to look around and make sure that there are no areas where these birds can use to make a home on your property. Make sure that boards on the side of your home are sealed and not loose. Look for gaps or holes in the siding of your home or in the roof. Make sure that there are no areas where birds can get into your attic or shed. Remove out these kinds of things and you will find that the birds will not find safe refuge there.
Another great idea that might assist you in helping to get rid of these kinds of nuisance birds is by using motion sensors that are linked to sprinklers. When the animals land on your lawn or other area of your property, the motion sensor detects their presence and activates the sprinkler system, spraying the birds. This startles them and they fly away. While they may return, the same action will happen to them each time that they do. While birds are not incredibly bright, they are smart enough to realize that if they are going to get hit by water each time they land on your property they are soon going to find someplace else to go.
There are also special kinds of mesh materials that you can put around the eaves of your house and devices you can put on your roof that make it difficult for birds to land around the roof of your home. This will keep them from safely landing on your roof or around it, thus they will not congregate there and stay.
The one thing that you should not really look into our repellent devices. There are many different commercial brands of repellents that tell you that they will have success in keeping birds away. The truth is, they will have no real success at all. What happens is that they may have some limited effect in the area where you directly spray the repellent, but the birds can simply fly to another spot on your property. If you are intending to spray the repellent everywhere, which can be quite costly, you will find the will have no success at all. In addition, the first time that it rains or after some heavy winds in your repellent will be useless.
There are electronic devices that admit an ultrasonic sound that companies swear will keep birds from landing on your property. The success of these is quite limited as well. The idea of what is proposed sounds like a good idea but no real research has conclusively found that these devices work. In fact, they can be quite expensive for you to purchase when you will get absolutely no benefit whatsoever.
A lot of times, the best kinds of solutions are the simplest ones. Use a little common sense and you will find that these animals will be gone in no time.
